At the start, the then named Chicago Society of Plastic Surgeons was incorporated in 1965. Joseph Kostauba, M.D. served as the first president of this prestigious society which restricts membership to only Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons who live in the State of Illinois. Currently, the organizations membership totals approximately 150 plastic surgeons.
The society was renamed to the Illinois Society of Plastic Surgeons to incorporate more of the state.
The Illinois Society of Plastic Surgeons strives to advance the art of plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery in an ethical manner, to educate its members and the public of recent medical advancements and to support its members in their efforts to provide the highest quality patient care.
The purposes of the Society are to advance the art of plastic and reconstructive surgery and the ethical and competent practice of this art; to foster an interest in plastic and reconstructive surgery and in all aspects of the reconstruction and rehabilitation of injured and deformed persons; to disseminate publications and materials of interest to those in the practice of plastic and reconstructive surgery; to act as a media for interchange of views and opinions in development of plastic and reconstructive surgery; to use those means which may seem the most desirable in general education; maintenance of libraries and other agencies and institutions appropriate hereto and to cooperate and assist other agencies of similar nature already established: and in general, to do all things necessary and useful in accomplishing purposes herein before set out. The object of the corporation shall be to advance the art and science of plastic surgery by study of all aspects of reconstruction and the rehabilitation of injured and deformed persons which come within the scope of plastic surgery.
The Distinguished Physician Award is awarded annually to a member in recognition of distinguished service to the Illinois Society of Plastic Surgeons and outstanding contributions to the education, practice and advancement of plastic surgery
